Homemade Stained Glass Frames

Given my poor track record with soldering (I have a tendency to solder my hair to my work), it's probably better that these stained glass pieces are held together with epoxy glue.

Fashioned from an upcycled picture frame, each piece is different! The one on the left (rainbow) has found a permanent home with us but a similar piece can be made upon request.

The green/champagne/clear frame is just over 5"x7" and is $5.00.
The orange/purple/blue frame is 7.5"x9.5" and is $7.00.

I've been dying to re-purpose all of MJ's jeans with tears in the butt and crotch areas. (Yes, he has an amazing ability to seriously damage these specific areas of his pants.) When I came across the suggestion of turning the seams into jewelry I just couldn't resist. Armed with a rotary punch, snap closures and some awesome lampwork beads, I went to work.

This first bracelet is actually a gift for my aunt, Jeannie. But now that I've gotten the hang of this I foresee many more recycled denim jewelry in my future. If you're interested in one for yourself and have a specific bead/color preference, let me know!

Watson the Wobbly: Sock Monster, Unlucky Rabbit

How can a rabbit be unlucky? By having no legs, of course! Nothing is more pathetic that a bunny with no hop in his step. Fortunately Watson has never had legs so he doesn't really know what he's missing.

Despite his obvious impairment, Watson still has a perfectly good set of arms ready for hugging. He also has two pristine ears ready to lend to you in your time of need. Just make sure you bring them back.

Watson is hand sewn from a bright acrylic sock and stuffed with the dreams of a dozen hamsters. His arms have been reinforced with a round of blanket stitching. He's also had a little face work done: a few blanket stitches have given him a permanent smile.

Samwise of SpamCakes is a peculiar sock monster indeed. Rocking a classic argyle pattern and sporting somewhat creepy button eyes, it’s unclear if you should love him or hate him. Let’s go with love, because otherwise you won’t buy him. (Face it, the only people who you hate yet still spend money on are relatives.)

Made from a [clean] pair of novelty socks and stitched entirely by hand using a strong crochet thread, a lot of time and patience has gone into making this little guy. Now, after all that hard work, he spends his days trying to avoid the boredoms of everyday life. He longs for excitement and adventure. Honestly, the company of Jekyll and these other sock monsters aren't doing it for him. You can see the disappointment in his face.

Dear Sam would like to come and live with you. He’s already housebroken and gets along well with cats. We haven’t tested him with dogs, but that’s primarily for his own safety. Adopt him today for just $10!

Puffy Pig Plushies

These little pigs are two thirds of a trio I made for the daughter of a friend (the first one escaped with her before I got a picture). She picked the colors, I made the pigs. Each one measures 3.5" long and 2.5" tall.

Western Blot Coasters

Anyone who thinks that science always works when you follow protocol obviously doesn't do science. These coasters are proof of this fact.

Made from the discarded blue films of Western blots gone wrong, these coasters are 4" in diameter, backed with sanded cork and sealed with a generous coating of epoxy. No two are the same, though all have brought equal shame to their creators.

Whatever the failure, each set of 4 is just $6.

Jackalope Painting: 5"x6"

I personally prefer the theory that they are a cross between an extinct species of pygmy deer and an elusive species of killer rabbits (which were probably engineered by the government and accidently set loose on the unsuspecting public... Night of the Lepus, anyone?).

Whatever your preference, this is an awesome little work of art. Painted with black and gray acrylics on a reclaimed lumber, this piece measures roughly 5”x6” and is ready for hanging.

Script Print Decoupage Vases

This once-Plain Jane glass vase (standard 7" tall) now makes a stunning display piece. The delicate script is printed on thin tissue paper, which is then carefully adhered to the glass before being coated with epoxy and sealed in acrylic.

This vase was done in pink but other pieces can be done in nearly any color. Display them in your own home or give someone flowers with a more personal touch. Since the glass interior is free of acrylic and epoxy, you can even use them as hurricanes for candles.

Upcycled Vinyl Record Bowls

Technological progress has left us with a long list of obsolete items that have gone the way of the dinosaurs. VHS beat out Betamax only to be killed off by DVD. Now DVD is getting a taste of its own medicine with the introduction of Blu-ray. But don’t worry, Blu-ray will get what’s coming now that we’re moving into a future completely devoid of tangible media products. Running the same gamut of natural selection, eight-tracks gave way to cassettes that later gave way to compact discs.

Among all these fallen technologies, one old dinosaur remains: VINYL! Unfortunately, like most dinosaurs, the vinyl records we come across today aren’t always well preserved. But just because they can’t serve their original purpose doesn’t mean that they should be abandoned!

For example, take these two records. Once upon a time they were bringing back the sounds of the Big Band Era. Mortally wounded in a spat with the turntable needle, they now live peaceful lives as display bowls. Keys, wallets, loose change, ripening fruit. They can handle it all, no problem.

Recently my dear husband asked me to make him a dice bag for his Sunday games. This is what he got (and he's very happy with it, and not just because he has to be).

Made from worsted weight yarn (in the color of your choice), this medium-sized bag measures roughly 6" in diameter and 6" tall. My biggest concern was being able to fit your entire hand in the bag with enough room to search around for that elusive d20. The bottom of the bag is done in a seed stitch to make it more stiff and durable while the body is done in stockinette stitch to allow for more stretchiness. The lettering was chosen by my husband but I could embroider a different design upon request.

Fabric Puff Flowers (Round 1: Orange, Blue and Green)

These flowers are just adorable. The first batch I made was for my Granny, who will be using some as magnets and others as pin cushions for her needlework.

These flowers represent the current fabrics I have in stock, but they can honestly be made with any color or pattern. They look equally cute with and without buttons (though all of these have them). Make them into magnets. Make them into hair bands or barrettes. Make them into broaches or buttons.

Wordy Tile Trivets

Recycled Sari Yarn Vases

First, I'd like to give a shout out to Darn Good Yarn, a wonderful small business run by Nicole Snow. She specializes in recycled yarns and ribbons that are bought directly from women's groups in Nepal.

These vases were rescued from a local thrift store and spruced up with some patience and a skein of unrefined sari silk yarn. The vase itself is still intact and would add pizzazz to any fresh bouquet.

These are the two finished vases available, but there are several more naked vases ready for a makeover.

Ahab, the Knit Squid!

Behold, my first amigurumi! His name is Ahab, though he still has all of his legs and isn't obsessed with revenge against pigmentally-challenged aquatic mammals.

Measuring nearly 20" long from head to tentacle, Ahab has enough arms to hug you four times over. He's quite content to perch on a book shelf or other vantage point, overseeing your daily life. No worries, he won't tell anyone about that thing you do when no one is looking.

I know, it's been a long time since I've posted a new item. My goal right now is to focus on making items using the supplies I've already acquired. Here's a cute one to get things rolling.

This standard, ho-hum picture frame got a much needed face lift with the help of some blue tissue paper and lime green ribbon. (The blue is actually more "royal blue" and less "neon blue" than the camera suggests.)

This frame holds a 5"x7" photo and can sit on a flat surface (vertical or horizontal) or hang on the wall. For just $6, this unique frame is great as an accent piece or a thoughtful gift.

Twisted Knit Scarf

I made this scarf for myself, but I figured I should put a couple photos up in case someone was interested in commissioning one of their own.

It's a double-knit design that creates a diagonal pattern. I made mine in "Grass" and "Aqua" with tassels in "Clay." Price would depend on the number of colors wanted, but should be about $15.

"Stained Glass" Wine Glass

These wine glasses were too scuffed to hang out with the fancy alcoholic beverage serving containers. Kicked to the curb, I've brought them home to show them that slapping a little lipstick on can do wonders.

This particular roughed-up diamond in the rough is sporting the bright red "lipstick." Other available colors include orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink (with bolds and pastels available for each). Decorate your window sill, slip a small candle inside for romantic lighting, or just let them be themselves on any available flat surface.

Just don't try to drink out of them. Epoxy isn't tasty, folks.

Wine glasses may very in size, as these are all reclaimed glassware. I have two available that are 7" tall (including the one pictured) and six available that are 6" tall. Each one is $2.50, regardless of color choice.

Wild and Crazy Cowl!

No, not cow. COWL. In case you're not familiar with this accessory, it's pretty much a scarf eating its own tail. Yes, I was skeptical as well. However, after making this one, I think I'm sold.

This strange creature started out as a standard scarf made from alternating brown and tan sections while occasionally working in black and sandstone fur yarn to add texture and contrast. Due to my minimal knit edging, the whole thing turned in on itself, creating a long tube of scarf. I tried to convince it to lay flat like a good scarf, but it would have none of it. In the end, I let the scarf follow it's true nature and pretend to be knit in the round when it wasn't.

I added tassels to each color change on the scarf, creating this aesthetically unique horizontal fringe. Once the whole thing was fringed and the two ends were sewn together, I let the strange new creature cuddle up around my neck.

And I'll be damned, this thing is pretty awesome! It's like a scarf that can't come loose or get caught on something. The stockinette stitch leaves it with a lot of "give" so you can easily stretch it over your head. After the exhausting photo shoot, I let the cute thing explore one of my kitchen chairs. Note the fringe sections along the length.

After that, the poor little thing was all tuckered out and took a nap.

I'm selling this odd cowl creature for $20, which is a bit more than my other knit items (but is due to needing 4 different yarns to do this design). Similar cowls can be made with different colors upon request.

Lipstick Wine Glass

Margarita Glass Candle Holder

Searching for my lost shaker of salt.

No worries, you won't need to take this item with a grain of salt.

Unloved and left at the thrift store, these glasses (only 2 available!!!) have found new life as candle holders. Each has been carefully coated in lime green (my camera has decided to make it appear more kelly green) and sealed with epoxy. These glasses are particularly suited for votive candles but, since I didn't have one, a tea light candle would have to do for display purposes.

These candle holders would be ideal for a home bar, or as a gift for that margarita lover you know.

It's a shame to let them go, but it's all in the name of raising money for Oz.

Oz, Post-Surgery

Oz is recovering well from his TPLO. He was walking on the leg in less than 24 hours and his spirit has never faltered, even though he's still being crated 95% of the day. They removed his 27 staples this week and commented on how amazed they were with his speedy recovery.

The morning after surgery:

My vets were kind enough to provide me with copies of the X-ray so I could show everyone what a $3,000 knee surgery looks like!

Other than a seroma developing on the inside of the knee, recovery has been smooth sailing. He's got about 6 more weeks to go before he's considered "healed," but at least he gets to have his crate where Tessa can talk to him. She loves to point at him, call him "Bobo," and let him lick her hands.

Utensil Monsters

Every day, countless orphan utensils are abandoned at thrift stores. Some are tarnished, others are out-dated, but all want nothing more than a place to call home: a home where people will smother them in food and then shove them into their mouths.

Oz Update: Surgery December 13, 2010

As many of you have heard, Oz finally ruptured his CCL over Thanksgiving. After a second evaluation by the veterinarians, he has been cleared for surgery on Monday, December 13^th. Hopefully he will only stay in the hospital till Tuesday or Wednesday. The rehabilitation center I had found for his physical therapy apparently closed last year, so I’m trying to find another one within a practical distance (so far Holly Springs and Durham are the only choices).

The good news is that $985.50 has been raised so far. That’s nearly 1/3 of his surgery costs!!!

I will continue to take orders and accept donations even after the surgery. In the meantime, I wanted to again thank everyone who has contributed to the cause.

That being said, we often find ourselves trying to gift wrap it and ending up disappointed. Bags, wine bottle tubes, and fancy ribbons can only do so much. If you want to make a big impression, you need one of these covers!

Sized for a standard 750 ml bottle, it can be used for both wine and many types of liquor. The stockinette stitch gives it the elasticity to accommodate different bottle shapes. They can also be made in practically any color!

Not only is this cover reusable, but it also provides cushioning against bumps (that could result in a broken bottle of wine *frowny face*) and can even help keep wine cool while serving!

Tuna and Egg Cat Delicacies

I won't call them cookies for two reasons. First, they are much smaller than normal cookies (~1" in diameter). Second, I think that cats would be angry if these delicious morsels were referred to as "cookies" or "treats." Those terms should be reserved for lesser creatures, like dogs and children.

This feline delicacy features whole wheat flour, cornmeal, egg and real tuna. No added fat like those store bought treats. They even smell like tuna, which will definitely bring 'em running.

Each batch makes roughly 50 treats. Each treat can easily be broken up into pieces, which will make them last even longer. At $4.50 a batch, this is a healthy way to win over your cat's affection.

Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies

Those are just a few responses I've gotten for these cookies.

These chocolate chips are loaded with both normal chocolate chips and creme de menthe baking chips. There's even a little mint extract thrown in to give the cookie itself a hint of mint. I don't actually add the food coloring that makes them green (like in this photo), but I have to use this picture because everyone ate all the cookies before I could get a shot of them for the site!

Each batch makes roughly 2 1/2 dozen cookies. At $8.50 a batch, they're a lot cheaper than crack but probably twice as addictive.

Mustache Wine Glass

Get your 'stache on, wine people! They say that drinking wine makes you look more sophisticated. If that's true, then drinking wine in a mustache-sporting glass makes you look downright brilliant.

This particular 7" tall wine glass was rescued from the local thrift store. It does possess minor cosmetic imperfections (appearing as tiny streaks or scratches) but it is free of cracks and chips. The tiny marks are most likely not even visible when the glass is actually in use, but I don't like people to be surprised when they order an item.I've positioned the mustache opposite of the imperfections.

I currently have 2 more identical wine glasses available for 'staching. Due to the condition of the glasses, these are being listed at $3 each.

The packed shopping malls. The distant relatives that are distant for a reason. The one bulb in your string of Christmas lights that has silently died and taken the rest of his brethren with him to the grave.

Honor the true holiday spirit of alcoholic pacification with these nifty ornaments!

Each ornament is adorned with the cap of bottled beer, a beer that was opened in our house during a moment of socialization, relaxation or possibly self-medication. Currently available ornaments are limited to our taste preferences (mainly Magners, Smithwick’s, and New Belgium Brewing Co.) and will be limited in number. If demand is high enough I may be willing to throw a few back in the name of art. Or you can just get the caps of choice to me for personalization!

Polka Dot Christmas Ornament

Add a little pizazz to your tree! These hand-painted polka dot ornaments are made from old decorations that had lost their shine. The base coat is done in a metallic color with flat acrylic paint for the dots. Then the whole thing is coated with acrylic sealer, accented with some feathery ribbon and topped with a gold bow for hanging.

This particular ornament was done in "fuchsia pearl" and topped with magenta feather ribbon. We also currently have paints in "antique gold," "metallic amethyst," "metallic gunmetal gray," "metallic blue topaz," "silver anniversary" and "antique copper." The other available feather ribbons are teal, silver and red.

Each ornament is unique and the tell-tale qualities of homemade ornaments (brush strokes and other very minor imperfections) have been left intentionally. Otherwise it would just look like another store-bought item.

Each polka dot explosion is just $3! At that price, you can get a decent set for your tree, or for someone else's tree.

"Drink Me" Teacup

Are you a fan of Alice in Wonderland? Or do you simply forget what those cute, little handled cups are for?

Well my absent-minded Mad Hatter, I have the teacup for you!

Each glass cup was rescued from a thrift store, abandoned and forgotten for being painfully boring. It's not the teacup's fault; it was made that way. I've taken pity on these unwanted pieces of glassware and hope that these little makeovers will find them new, loving homes.

Whenever possible, I try to rescue them in sets. Sometimes I can only find one. This means that availability of pieces is completely luck of the draw.

Christmas Ornaments v1.0 (Red or White)

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, we find ourselves taking short cuts, buying pre-packaged frozen dinners and 2-in-1 hair products.

Christmas is no different. Heck, artificial trees come PRE-LIT now. Sure, it spares us the frustration of putting up the lights every year but it also robs future generations of yet another holiday "tradition;" that tradition of watching their parents' composure quickly deteriorate as they try to untangle the infamous ball of Christmas lights.

And then there are the pre-packaged boxes of tree ornaments. Color coded, assorted shapes and... well, that's it. No love, no memories. Just a box of perfect, pretty little balls, icicles, stars and bells. What happened to the Popsicle stick reindeer? The construction paper wreaths? The popcorn-string garland? Okay, our cats ate that one.

I challenge you to keep your tree from becoming a picture out of a Good Housekeeping magazine. Decorate your tree with things for which you can be sentimental. And these ornaments are a good place to start.

These ornaments started as old, discolored gold ornaments and now have a new lease on life thanks to corded ribbon and a little patience. I still need to add the ribbon loop to the top (which will replace the old, damaged metal hangers).

Peanut Butter Dog Cookies v2.0!

Practice makes perfect!

With a little patience, I was able to make the second round of peanut butter/rolled oat dog treats without adding extra water (which made them more like cookies and less like sticky lumps of goo). What does this mean for you? More cookies per batch!

So what, you ask? Well, you OBVIOUSLY haven't let your dog try these treats.

In simple mathematical terms:
More cookies per batch = ability to give dog a second cookie when he won't go the heck away after the first cookie = increased likelihood that he will go away before a third cookie must be sacrificed for your sanity

These new, smaller cookies are 35 calories each with 1.3 grams fat (rather than 53 calories/2 grams fat). A batch will now make roughly 60 cookies (rather than the original 40). Obviously, the price per batch has not increased ($5).

Fuzzy Scarf Attack!

Aren't Tribbles adorable? You just want to grab one and smother it in affection. Star Trek writers really had a great idea there. Unfortunately, given their rotund figure, they are not ideal for wrapping around your neck. The Tribbles, not the writers.

Then there are big muthafudgin' snakes. They do a great job of wrapping around your neck, but they're more likely to close your airway than keep you warm.

My friends, I have your solution. I have created a furry, snake-like artificial Tribble that can be posed around your neck during cold weather... or whenever you have the urge to wrap a long, furry inanimate object around your neck.

Behold... the furry neck scarf! These critters are 36" long and 4" wide, light-weight and available in many colors. This particular individual is sporting a Margaritaville-lime shade. They can also be done in multiple hues, or longer lengths (for the cost of more furry yarn guts).

The following warning should be mentioned: There is no guarantee that your new-found furry scarf friend won't try to strangle any current furry members of the household who may compete with it for attention.

Knitted Leg Warmers & Arm Warmers for Baby

The weather is getting colder. This means buying more clothes for your little munchkin. But what if you could extend the life of those shorts and shirts? BEHOLD, your prayers have been answered!

If you're like me, you'll end up using these as a substitute for pants when you're at home. Why? You don't have to pull off their pants or shorts every time you need to change a diaper! And while your munchkin is exploring (aka, running a muck as she crawls around your now baby-proofed home), her knees will be protected as they cross carpet, tile, wood or fire. Okay, maybe not fire.

These warmers can be done in any color, any size. This set is being done in Paton's "kimono" with "taupe" cuffs. They measure 9" long, with a 5" ankle circumference and 8" thigh circumference. Tess is already sporting 12-18 months clothes (despite being 10 months old), so this will give you an idea on how it would fit your little monster.

Cheddar Cheese & Green Bean Dog Cookies

Make sure your dog eats his veggies! These cheddar cheese and green bean cookies combine the two things that all dogs (or at least MY dogs) love more than anything else in the world. Okay, maybe after butt scratches.

And the best part about these cookies? They're GOOD FOR THEM! Made with whole wheat flour, green beans, low fat cheese & milk, and low fat/low sodium beef broth... well, it's just... LOW! A single batch makes about sixty 11/4" cookies, which is good because your dog WILL NOT let you give them JUST ONE cookie. And that's okay, with each cookie only being 30 calories and 0.4 grams of fat. But don't tell them that.

Each batch (60 cookies) runs $7.50. They store for 3 weeks in the fridge and up to six months in the freezer. Personally, I don't think a batch will last a week in my house.

New and improved! No, seriously.

These androids have the same color and attitude but are now painted on textured card stock that is then adhered to the tile. The white outline really makes the 'bots stand out, and the optional white pattern on the background adds even more charm without detracting from the main attraction.

Despite the increased labor and supplies, these 4"x4" coasters still only cost $4/pair!

8-Bit Mario Mushroom Coasters

Flaunt your inner geek. I said FLAUNT IT! Don't know how? These drink coasters will definitely be a step in the right direction.

This classic set is painted onto thick, textured card stock and adhered to ceramic tile. It's then coated in epoxy and double-coated in acrylic sealer. Below is an image from the prototypes (back when I tried painting directly onto tile... what an epic mistake!), which sports the "poison" mushroom which is also available.

These 4"x4" tiles are available in any combination of mushrooms and run $4/pair.
